State Budget Update

Vicky Carwein, April 24, 2017

Dear Campus Community,

Early Saturday morning, the Indiana General Assembly adjourned the 2017 legislative session and passed HB 1001 (now known as HEA 1001) or the state budget bill. The university is well positioned for the next two years as we work towards finalizing the realignment and building Purdue Fort Wayne.

In the last biennium budget, the university was allocated $41.5 million for FY17. In the 2017-2019 budget, the university allocation for general operating expenses will be:

  • $42.1 million for FY18
  • $42.6 million for FY19

Additionally, the university was allocated $1 million in capital funds for the Purdue Fort Wayne School of Music. At last week’s Board of Trustees meeting, I; John O’Connell (dean, college of visual and performing arts); Greg Jones (chair, department of music); and Chuck Surack (founder and president, Sweetwater) had the opportunity to present a vision for the School of Music and how the school could distinguish itself from all others. The funds allocated by the General Assembly will significantly impact the expansion of our music programs and build upon an already strong foundation.

Chancellor Vicky Carwein
