General Manager of University of Kentucky IMG Sports Marketing

BS '02 - General Studies

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Brian to discuss what advice he has for current students and how his education allowed him to build a resume and eventually land a job with IMG College. Spend a few minutes with our new leader and fellow IPFW Mastodon, Brian Miller!

Q: How has your degree been beneficial to you and your career?
A: My degree gave me the flexibility to work as a student and focus in on a variety of interests. I always knew I wanted to work in sports and to do so I needed a four-year degree and I needed lots of real-world experience. A General Studies degree gave me the opportunity to earn a degree and work for the Athletic Department, the Communicator, Fort Wayne Wizards and Fort Wayne Komets.

Q: How did you become interested in your field?
A: My father and I share a love of Sports. Some of my favorite memories are of him and I watching games and celebrating our teams successes. Through him, I found that Sports bring people together, despite the person’s background or history being a fan unites many people. He always encouraged me to do what I love and I have always had a love for sports. My time at IPFW taught me that I could make it a job and know being at IMG I have certainly made it a career.

Q: What is the best career advice you were given?
A: "Dream Big - you can be anything you want to be." My parents always believed in me and it gave me a great sense of confidence to dream big and go out and achieve those goals.

Q: Was there anyone during your time at IPFW who acted as a mentor to you?
A: I had several, they say it takes a village and it certainly did with me. First off, I would say Sandy McMurtrie, she was my advisor and kept my academic career on track. If it were not for her and the General Studies program, I probably would have left college and entered the workforce. Secondly, Mark Pope he gave me support as a student worker and offered me a position within the IPFW Athletics department immediately upon graduation. I also had a lot of folks along the way from Coaches to Teachers to advisors that made a big impact in my life

Q: What course(s) have you found to be most valuable in your professional life?
A: It has to be some of the Communication Classes I took. Life is all about relationships and you have to be able to communicate with the people in your life, both up the ladder and down the ladder. Communication courses gave me a sense of self-confidence, which I still carry with me today.

Q: What would be your advice to someone who is considering IPFW?
A: Be proud of going to IPFW, it is a great school and truly allows students the opportunity to get involved. The more you put into your college experience, the more you will get out. These days you cannot just be a student you need to get involved and network. You need more than just a degree on your resume coming out of college.

Q: What advice would you give to current IPFW students?
A: Get involved, don't let these years slip away with out finding life-long friends and mentors. Your college career will end quickly and you need to have relationships in place that can help you start your career.

Q: What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishments, both personally and professionally?
A:
Professionally, I was named General Manager for University of Kentucky IMG Sports Marketing.
