FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The two-year Dental Laboratory Technology program at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) is continuing its streak of accreditation by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). A recent letter from CODA confirmed the program’s latest accreditation. The program, which is the only one of its kind in Indiana and one of only 19 fully accredited programs in the United States, has maintained full accreditation since it began in 1972.

Brooke Pratt, interim director of the program since the first of the year, says that a dental laboratory technician (DLT) functions within the dental health team “…much as a pharmacist functions within the medical care team. The technician fabricates the appliances to the specification provided by the dentists. At IPFW the students learn to fabricate dental prostheses which include full dentures, removable partial dentures, fixed crowns and bridges, ceramic restorations, and orthodontic appliances. Graduates from the program are currently employed throughout the country as dental technicians, department managers, laboratory owners, dental sales reps, and educators.”

Pratt is a 2006 graduate of the program who came back to IPFW after graduation and worked as a laboratory assistant while also working full time at an outside dental lab. In 2008 she began teaching in the program and in 2011 was hired as a full-time visiting instructor. Pratt also earned a Bachelor of General Studies in 2008 and a Master of Public Management with a concentration in health systems administration and policy in 2010, both from IPFW.
