Radio Technology Developed at IPFW Licensed by First Fort Wayne University Startup

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Wireless service providers and other high-tech companies could benefit from technology that has been discovered and developed at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and licensed to a subsidiary of Adaptive Micro-Ware Inc.

Adaptive RF Corp., which was formed to research and commercialize advanced radio technology products and services, has licensed intellectual property developed by Todor Cooklev, ITT associate professor of wireless communications and applied research and director of the Center for Wireless Technology.

Cooklev will be CEO of Adaptive RF Corp. He said the technology addresses the increasingly congested radio spectrum, which the Federal Communications Commission oversees.

"This congestion requires monitoring of the radio spectrum," he said. "Now, cloud-based radios are promising to deliver lower capital expenses and operating expenses to wireless service providers."

The technology was licensed through the Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization, which helped file a patent to protect the innovation. Bob Kniskern, president and CTO of Adaptive Micro-Ware, explained why the company licensed the technology and created Adaptive RF Corp.

"Todor's conceptual and technological approach aligned with our vision of next-generation radio platforms," he said. "Adaptive Micro-Ware's and Purdue's joint efforts on past and current SBIR projects further reinforced the synergies."

Jon A. Huard, partner, said there are several near-term steps to further develop Adaptive RF Corp. "These steps include continued research and development efforts and deploying test platforms to evaluate performance and collect real-world results for initial services," he said. "We anticipate that early partners may include federal agencies and telecommunications research organizations in addition to existing network test partners. We will then refine the business model, which will include identifying specific funding needs."

Cooklev said the environment of innovation at IPFW could become stronger because of the licensing agreement with Adaptive RF Corp. "This is the first startup in Fort Wayne that is licensing technology through the Purdue Research Foundation," he said. "This is an historic accomplishment by itself and it could encourage increased innovation and commercialization at IPFW."

Kniskern said the license agreement could strengthen future possibilities for economic growth in Fort Wayne and the state.

"Since Adaptive Micro-Ware was founded more than 30 years ago, it has been an industry leader in designing, developing, and deploying advanced technologies for major companies in the defense, broadcast, and telecommunications industries," he said. "This license agreement reflects a commitment from Adaptive to further high-tech economic growth opportunities in Fort Wayne and Indiana."
