IPFW Students Continue Winning Ways in International Business Strategy Competition

Key Info

  • IPFW team at top of international competition
  • Business students compete in online exercises paralleling real-world markets
  • More than 4,800 teams from more than 300 colleges take part

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—It’s becoming something of a tradition: a team of Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) students is again claiming top honors in the Business Strategy Game (BSG). This year’s team, whose members include Philip Hernandez, Ling Zheng, Jerry Pauley, Jordan Keil, Kevin Handley, Chris Lampe, and Nora Cochran, earned a Global Top 100 ranking for their company’s performance during the week of November 5–11, 2012. The competition is part of the class work in the senior capstone strategy class taught by Associate Professor of Small Business and Entrepreneurship William Todorovic. The class is a requirement for all business majors.

According to its website, the BSG is an “…online exercise where class members are divided into teams and assigned the task of running an athletic footwear company in head-to-head competition against companies managed by other class members.” Each company has to sell branded and private label athletic shoes in Europe, Africa, North America, the Asia-Pacific region, and Latin America. Every aspect of the game parallels the real-world athletic shoe market. The players have to come up with strategies that result in a positive brand image, keep the company on track for market leadership, and produce good financial performances.

In an email to Todorovic, the game’s creators also congratulated the team on its overall game-to-date score, noting “…their overall score of 110.0 tied for the best overall core performance of the week, worldwide!”

There are more than 4,800 teams from 309 colleges and universities taking part in the contest. For more information on the team or the contest, contact Todorovic at 260-481-6940 or todorovz@ipfw.edu.
