FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne is pleased to announce Joanne Bauman and Sydney Miracle of the Department of Nursing are the 2012–13 Academic Advisors of the Year. The announcement was made today (Thursday, April 11, 2013) at the annual Academic Advising luncheon.
Carol Sternberger, chair of the department and associate vice chancellor for faculty development, nominated Bauman and Miracle, saying, “…as individuals, both women are incredible advocates for our students and are outstanding contributors to the department. However, together, they are an unstoppable, energetic, and ingenious team. As a team, they complement each other’s strengths and play off each other’s ideas, creating projects and processes that have grown well beyond the department. They think in terms of student recruitment and student success at both the department and college levels. When one leads an initiative the other picks up the workload to allow an idea to come to fruition.”
Ann Obergfell, dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences, echoed Sternberger’s sentiments. “Both of these women go above and beyond in making contact with both pre-nursing and nursing students, offering guidance and making referrals to other campus resources as needed. They look for ways to meet students in informal settings and provide opportunities for students to connect with them and the Department of Nursing. They are visionary in their approach to students and advising. They have analyzed the issues related to student success and have reached across the campus to make sure that individuals who interact with nursing students have accurate information regarding program admission, progression, and retention policies.”
Bauman has been an academic advisor at IPFW since 2003; Miracle since 2007.
