IPFW Offers Free Simple Wills with Gift to Charity

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne’s (IPFW) Office of Advancement is partnering with Beers Mallers Backs & Salin, LLP to hold the annual Write a Will event on Monday, October 23, from 2 to 5 p.m. and Friday, October 27, from 9 a.m. to noon in the advancement office, located at 4110 W. Housing Drive, Waterfield Campus Student Housing. Participants should use the Crescent Avenue entrance across from the main campus.

Those interested in getting a simple will written can do so at no cost if they include a charitable gift in their will. There are no requirements on the amount of money given or the charitable organization named.

Participants will be able to rest easy knowing that their property is distributed according to their wishes, estate or inheritance taxes are minimized as much as possible, and a representative is appointed to handle their affairs.

“So many times, we have found out after a person has passed that they included the university in their estate planning,” said Angie Fincannon, vice chancellor for advancement. “Offering this free will-writing service allows us the opportunity to acknowledge those generous gifts now and show donors the positive impact on our students.”

Donors who choose to leave a legacy gift to the university will be eligible to join the Weitzman Legacy Society. Oscar and Ophelia Weitzman were very forward-thinking, building the future with leadership in education and engineering. The Weitzman’s legacy gift made IPFW the sole recipient of the couple’s $3.4 million bequest, the largest single donation the university had ever received. Their gift is used to fund full scholarships for students in engineering and education. Because of their generosity, the university’s planned gift program reflects the Weitzman name. Weitzman Legacy Society members enjoy special benefits, including a membership certificate and commemorative pin, recognition in the Legacy Council, and an invitation to the annual Celebrate Philanthropy dinner.

Pre-registration is required. To sign up for the event or get more information, contact Eve Colchin at 260-481-6659 or email
