Lunch with an IPFW Scientist

When: February 8, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM - Add to Calendar
Where: Science Central, 1950 N. Clinton St.

  • Eric Tippmann, assistant professor of chemistry, “Finding the Needle from the Haystack: Separating Ions and Dyes”
  • We will be using the very classical technique of ion and dye separation using paper chromatography. The ability to separate mixtures is a powerful means to identify individual components from a “mess”. We will see how to “take apart” common dyes and see what they are really made of. We will also see how chemists and forensic scientists are able to identify individual metals, such as the iron in blood, in the presence of many other metals using specific stains
  • Ages: For ages 8 and up with accompanying adult
  • Time: Check-in (10:45-11 a.m.), Program (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.)
