Requirements
Admission
After official admission to IPFW (contact IPFW Admissions at 260-481-6812), advising may be arranged by calling the Department of Visual Communication and Design at 260-481-6709. The bachelor and associate degree programs begin with a sequence of foundation courses. After the sophomore year, students submit a portfolio of selected creative work for review. When the faculty approve admission to a four-year degree program, advanced work in a chosen area of concentration may begin.
Portfolio Review
Portfolio Review is a means of interim assessment for the department and student. It is also the vehicle for a student’s entry into upper level studio course work. No studio classes level 300 or above may be taken until after a successful portfolio review is completed by the student. Only after successful completion of a portfolio review may a student enroll in a VCD sponsored internship.
After completing 60 credit hours, students are responsible for signing up for their respective reviews by contacting the Visual Communication and Design secretary in VA 213 (481-6709.) To apply for portfolio review, students submit examples of course work from their freshman and sophomore year and are asked to choose an area of concentration. The work will be reviewed by a committee of the studio faculty. Upon successful completion of the review, the student is accepted into the B.F.A. program and may begin their upper level course of study.
If a student fails to pass portfolio review due to a deficiency in content, skills or presentation, he/she will be asked to resubmit their work for review at a later date. Information will be provided as to the necessary changes and additions required to resubmit. Students may apply for portfolio review no more than two times.
