Undergraduate Programs

Study Emphasis

The Bachelor of Fine Arts program is designed for exceptional students who are interested in pursuing a professional career in the field of visual communication and design. They must have demonstrated superior ability and motivation in a particular discipline. During the first year of classes, students complete the comprehensive studio foundation program, comprised of drawing, digital imaging, color theory, and 2-D and 3-D design. This sequence is designed to provide a broad understanding of visual communication and development of basic technical skills. The A.S. is structured so that students completing that two-year program can easily continue in any of the four-year programs.

Majors must complete a senior project in the elected area of concentration. This two-semester course requires of the student a project incorporating an in-depth study and exploration of an artistic endeavor. The senior project culminates in a B.F.A. thesis exhibition that is judged by the faculty and reviewed by the public.  An artist’s statement and project description is a requirement of the exhibition installation.

The areas of study emphasis include:

  • Graphic Design
  • Photography
  • Computer Art
  • Commercial Art

At each level of study, visual communication and design majors experience campus exhibitions. From foundation level shows to exhibitions by graduating seniors, student work can be viewed throughout the Visual Arts Building. Additionally, faculty and other professional exhibitions provide a unique educational opportunity for all IPFW students, and faculty and student art is permanently installed across campus. Students can supplement their growth through easy access to the many regional art galleries, ArtLink and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Frequent trips to the Chicago Art Institute and other renowned museums, along with international art tours and study abroad, inspire students and faculty alike, and guest artists present special workshops and lectures for students, faculty, and the community.

IPFW is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access University.
