Advising and Registration

Academic Advising

Academic advising is essential to a productive academic experience. Advisors can identify and explain the most effective course sequence and help students select classes that best fit their individual curricula and career goals.

The advisor can also help you

  • Design an appropriate course load
  • Answer questions and address problems
  • Link your program of study to relevant career opportunities
  • Identify other university personnel and services that can assist you
  • Provide assistance in the registration process

Each department assigns an advisor for each student. Students who have declared a major through the office of the Registrar should contact their department to schedule their first meeting with their advisor.

Registration

While advice on course selection is provided by the academic advisor, students may register for their classes through OASIS. I need more OASIS information here. Students can enter OASIS portal from their my.ipfw.edu home page. For more assistance on OASIS contact the ITS Help Desk in KT 206 or call 260-481-6030.

Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for their academic progress. To be successful, you must

  • Be knowledgeable about university, school/division, and departmental program requirements; academic regulations; and calendar deadlines specified in the Bulletin, Schedule of Classes, and departmental publications.
  • Consult with your advisor whenever appropriate and in a timely manner.
  • Be prepared for all scheduled advising sessions.
  • Make academic decisions based upon the information obtained or recommendations offered. Academic advisors will not make decisions for students.
  • Act upon academic decisions in a timely manner.
  • Maintain personal records of academic progress, including documentation of approved exceptions to stated program requirements.
  • Seek additional or supplemental advice from other university personnel or services as needed or recommended.
  • Present and candidly discuss factors (such as employment, commuting distance, and other circumstances) that might influence selection of classes, registration processes, and other academic planning.
