Undergraduate Programs
Study Emphasis
Through its various degree programs, the Department of Music offers specializations in a number of areas of music. However, the Department of Music believes that all musical study and professional pursuits require a solid foundation of musicianship. To this end, the department requires of all majors a 33-hour common core of courses in music theory, aural skills, conducting, music history/literature and technology.
Performance Studies
The department also believes that the career musician, music educator or music therapist must develop his/her musicianship to the highest level possible. For this reason, all degree programs require a solo recital near the end of the academic program. The performance degree requires a junior recital and a senior recital. Students study under the direction of excellent performing artists, many of whom are members of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.
Ensembles: Music majors and qualified non-majors also enhance their musical growth by participating in musical ensembles. Ensembles include University Singers, Chamber Singers, Choral Union, Opera Ensemble, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, IPFW Community Orchestra, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and a number of chamber ensembles. Several ensembles tour regionally and nationally. All ensembles require an audition and instructor permission.
Choral Ensembles: The IPFW Choral Program offers an exceptional choral experience, known for excellence throughout the region. Repertoire includes varied selections ranging from the masterpieces of the western choral literature to works from other cultures. Also included are arrangements of spirituals and folksongs from America and other countries.
All choral ensembles are open to all academic majors, with Chamber Singers being the most highly selective group. The goal of the choral program at IPFW is to provide students and community members the opportunity to participate in an enriching experience that complements education, no matter what the major area of study may be. Those with a musical background are invited to audition for one of the department’s choirs. Students will have an enjoyable and enriching experience, meet people from across campus, continue vocal development and build lasting friendships and memories.
University Singers: The University Singers is a large, auditioned choral ensemble, open to majors and non-majors who wish to rehearse and perform choral literature selected from throughout music history.
