Faculty Responsibilities

Contract Dates
All faculty on 10-month appointments are expected to be available and on campus one week prior to the beginning of each semester. The appointment period ends after the completion of all assigned duties (usually after grades are turned in to the Registrar's Office). Faculty on 12-month appointments are expected to be available during their entire contract period. Summer or other special contracts will clearly state the appointment dates.

Office Hours
All faculty are expected to maintain regularly scheduled on-campus office hours when they are available for student consultation. Office hours should be posted, listed on course syllabi, and should also be turned in to the department office.

Faculty Loads
All full-time faculty are responsible for a 12-hour load each semester. All untenured faculty and faculty who select the research track will receive 3 hours credit for research. Faculty who select the teaching track do not receive the research credit and are not expected to provide evidence of research. Visiting faculty and Continuing Lecturers follow the teaching track. Faculty may also receive load credit for administrative responsibilities, departmental creative endeavor, or other assigned duties subject to the approval of the department chair and the dean. Faculty will declare which track they intend to follow in the Projected Productivity Goals submitted during the evalution process of the previous year.  In addition, all faculty are expected to take part in appropriate departmental, school, university and professional service activities.

Syllabi
Faculty will provide every student in every class with a syllabus. Copies of the syllabus should also be submitted to the department office. The syllabus should clearly state all course information, required texts and materials, course objectives, course requirements, and any other pertinent information.  Syllabus guidelines are available on this site.

Examinations
No examinations may be scheduled during the final week of regular classes.  All final exams are to be given during finals week at the time scheduled by the registrar.

Outside Activities
Faculty must file the appropriate outside activity report form when engaging in professional activites outside the university.  Purdue faculty should file form 32A and Form C-1 (if applicable) and IU faculty should file form IP32.  Such outside activities might include, but are not limited to, professional consulting; commissions; directing, conducting, performing, designing or teaching at other institutions or venues; or professional service obligations.

Contracts with Outside Agencies
All contracts or agreements with non-university agencies or personnel must be approved by the department chair, the VPA Business Manager, the Dean, and the IPFW Business Office.  The university will not honor any commitment of university funds, resources, or personnel that has not received these approvals.
