Guidelines
I. Purpose: Excellence in service is central to the mission of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The definition of service should include university service, professional service to the community, and service to the discipline or profession. The purpose of this award is to encourage and support faculty growth in service through the recognition of excellence in service. The award consists of a plaque and an award of $1,000 payable as S & E / travel or cash (taxable). The VPA Excellence in Service Award is presented every third year, (2003-04; 2006-07; 2009-10, etc.).
II. Eligibility: All tenured or tenure-track faculty of the College of VIsual and Performing Arts are eligible for this award. Any number of applications may be received from any VPA department. The selection committee may choose not to present the award if no nominations meet the criteria.
III. Deadline and Recognition: Applications are due March 1 of each year. Recipients will be recognized at the Annual VPA Contributor's Celebration or other appropriate event.
IV. Nominating Procedures: Faculty may be self-nominated or nominated by another individual. Whether the candidate is self-nominated or nominated by another has no effect on the evaluation process. Nominees will prepare their own materials for submission.
V. The Selection Committee: The VPA Excellence in Service Award Committee recommends the annual recipient to the dean. The committee consists of four tenured faculty, one from each department, appointed by the dean. If any member of the committee nominates an individual for this award or is a nominee under consideration, that member is ineligible to serve. When a member is ineligible to serve, the dean will appoint a replacement. Previous recipients, whether tenured or not, will be asked to serve on the committee, with a maximum of one per department.
VI. Application Content
The following materials are to be submitted in the order
specified below with dividers separating the categories. Twelve pages, not including
the annual reports (Section A) is the maximum length of the document. Inclusion
of optional materials (sections B-C) strengthens the presentation.
A. Required Materials -
1. nominee's self-assessment of service excellence;
2. the service section of the Faculty Annual Productivity Reports from the last three years;
3. chair's performance evaluations of service;
4. nominee's vita.
B. Optional Materials - Additional materials may include, but are not limited to:
C. Other evidence of service excellence not included above.1. peer review and/or peer comments;
2. community feedback;
3. descriptions of professional consultancies;
4. descriptions of activities linking the community and the university;
5. descriptions of work with professional organizations;
6. external reviews of service, such as letters of documentation
