0128--Student Ethics in Online Courses: Some Case Histories
Presented by: Joy Colwell, Purdue University Calumet
The Organizational Leadership and Supervision (OLS) program at Purdue University Calumet has offered asynchronous online instruction since 1998. Since that time instructors in the program have experienced instances of confirmed and suspected cheating by students in different courses in the program, involving assignments, quizzes and testing and peer-reviewed papers. This paper will discuss the University policy on student ethics, specific instances of student cheating, and how instructors have addressed the issues of cheating in online courses. Some topics to be discussed include the use of timed tests, randomized testing, review of abnormal statistics in test results, ethics policies and honor code statements and pledges, and reviewing student email addresses for similarity. Penalties imposed for student cheating will also be discussed.
