Studio M Orientation and Guidelines

Clients of Studio M will need to complete the Studio M Orientation (below) and submit a signed Studio M Guideline form before gaining access to a studio workstation.

Studio M Guidelines can be found here.

Studio M Orientation

Studio M is a high performance multimedia production studio specializing in 3D production, CD and DVD authoring, audio / video production, and web presentation software. The high end technology behind Studio M introduces students and faculty to more progressive presentation development and creation, in turn, better preparing students for the work place.

In addition to the high-tech production environment, students also have the ability to check out either a digital SLR Camera or MiniDV Camcorder to use in their projects. Students will be required to go through additional orientation over use of the cameras.

Studio M is available for faculty to instruct small groups of students (up to six) on the software available and how it can be utilized for class projects. To aid in group instruction, demonstration, or preview, Studio M offers overhead projection and built-in screen.

Studio M is able to support collaborative group work, which helps promote the importance of teamwork and networking to the students. The studio is also an open lab that students can schedule time to work in individually. Scheduling the computers is of key importance so that all students will be able to gain access according to their schedules. Walk in use is an option as well if any computers are open.

Studio M use is restricted to academic based projects. Faculty will need to provide syllabus material documenting the requirements for student projects that will utilize the Studio M facility.

Reservation of all systems range from 1 – 2 hours at a time, so careful project planning is very important in order for students and faculty to utilize the facilities to their advantage. The coordinator of Studio M, John Ladd, will be able to help students and faculty plan a production timeline during lab consultations prior to lab reservations.

Any student found to be using a Studio M workstation for personal communications, entertainment or unrelated academic purpose while other students are waiting for use, will be asked to vacate the workstation.

External storage

Students and faculty that choose to use Studio M must back up all of their files. Studio M cannot guarantee the absolute preservation of files after the user has logged off of the workstation. Safe forms of back-up that can be used are: CD / DVD-RW Media, External Hard Drives and Thumb Drives. Studio M does not supply this additional storage media; that responsibility is up to the user.

Studio M workstations have ample amount of storage for student projects that are in current production. All projects will need to be cleared off of the systems one week after the project due date. No one should save their files to the desktop! Files on the desktop will get deleted. Always use the workstations “D:\User\(user_name)” location for saving files. For Mac users, saving to the desktop user folder is the only option available at this time. Additional storage should be used and is encouraged.
