Research Interests

Professor Ae-Sook Kim’s research interests focus on state politics and the policy making process, focusing on welfare and health policies. She is interested in not only policy formulation but also impacts of public policies and societal structures on the well-being of citizens, especially on health outcomes of the population. Her dissertation, entitled “Policy Innovation, Diffusion, Reinvention, and Evolution in State Medicaid Managed Care Programs,” explores states’ transition of health care delivery and financing systems into managed care in a theoretical framework of policy innovation, diffusion, and reinvention. Her dissertation also explores states’ program variations of Medicaid managed care in terms of program coverage and enrollments in relation with states’ political, economic, socio-demographic characteristics. Differences in a risk-based and a fee-for-serviced-based program are explored. All of her research is based on the application of very sophisticated and quantitative statistical methods – OLS, Logit, Probit, and other forms of single-state & multi-level regression; survival analysis; regression models for counts such as Poisson and (Zero-inflated) negative binomial regression analysis. She is also proficient in survey instrument development and survey data analysis.
