My interest in sociology began in India during the early 1960's. As a young man in my 20's, I wanted to drastically change the social system in India which, as many know, has been and still is riddled with deep rooted casteism, sexism, racism, and ethnocentrism. As a member of a ethnic minority,I looked at sociology to not only help me explain why apparently nice people do nasty things, but also to help me change the socio-economic milieu of humans to alter their behavior. After more than 35 years of teaching sociology in the United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia and doing research and traveling in dozens of countries in Asia, Middle-East, and Europe, I still believe sociology can help us explain why people act the way they do and why issues of sexism, racism, and economic inequality persist in all societies.
