Tom Overton, Ph.D.

Continuing Lecturer of Sociology

Research Interests

Environmental Sociology, Distance Learning and Education, Introductory Sociology, Rural and Community Sociology, Theory, Sociology of Education, Sociology of Gender, Sociology of Religion

Tom earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Michigan State University, and his sociology Ph.D. is from North Carolina State University with specialty areas of community and rural/environmental sociology. His research interests include rural poverty, rural environment, rural stratification, and sociological theory, especially with respect to Habermasian/neo-Marxist theory.

In addition to teaching at IPFW, he was also a teacher in Michigan public schools, the principal of a private school, and an instructor at North Carolina State University, College of Charleston in South Carolina, Western Michigan University, Lake Michigan College, Southwestern Michigan College, and Indiana University at South Bend.
