Welcome

Welcome to the home page for the Department of Sociology at Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne. Sociology is the academic discipline that looks for the patterns of human behavior and seeks to discover the social forces that create these patterns. The discipline provides students with a lens through which to view society in order to uncover the patterns and the social forces which impact people's lives.

To help students gain a greater understanding of society, the people in society, and the interaction between an individual and the larger society, the department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. In addition to the undergraduate curriculum, the department also offers a Master of Arts degree in Sociological Practice.

Sociology studies society and the groups within it and the effect of society and group forces on individual behavior. If you are interested in any career that requires an understanding of why people act the way they do, consider a major in sociology. Writing ability, analytical skill, knowledge of the scientific method, and natural curiosity about human behavior are important traits for success as a sociology major.  Students who study sociology are usually interested in current events, societal changes, human behavior, how families are organized the way they are, causes of divorce, crime, how change occurs in society, economics, political systems, or any aspect of society or human behavior.
