Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Am I required to attend SOAR in order to get my classes?

Answer: Yes, it is mandatory that all first-year students, who are first -time, degree seeking and have less than 30 credit hours, attend SOAR to register for classes. At SOAR, students will meet with an academic advisor who will assist you in understanding the requirements of your major and in selecting courses.

Q. How long is the SOAR program?

Answer: SOAR check-in begins at 8:00am in Walb Student Union. The day should conclude by approximately 4:00pm. The SOAR program is a full 8 hour day, so plan accordingly. Go to the SOAR schedule now.

Q. Can family and friends attend with me?

Answer: We do encourage each student to bring a parent or family member. In addition, there will be a special afternoon break-out session just for family members.

Q. I need to leave for work and can't stay the whole day. Can I register early? I work in the morning. Can I just come for the afternoon sessions?

Answer: The SOAR day is carefully designed to provide students with all of the necessary information to help them make appropriate choices when registering for classes. If you cannot attend the entire SOAR day, you will be asked to reschedule on another day when you can fully participate in SOAR.

Q. I changed my major since I filled out the Admissions application. Who do I tell?

Answer: Contact the Admissions office at 260-481-6812 and tell them that you have changed your major. If you declared "Undecided" on your application and have now chosen a major, contact the Admissions office and let them know what major you have chosen.

Q. Can I change my major at SOAR?

Answer: An Admissions representative will be available at SOAR check-in to meet with students who want to change their major. However, to avoid any confusion on the day of SOAR, please try to make any changes to your major in advance of the SOAR day.

Q. Can I meet with my advisor at SOAR?

Answer: During the SOAR day, students will have the opportunity to meet briefly with an advisor from their department. If you wish, you may schedule a follow-up appointment with your advisor after your SOAR day to discuss any questions that were not answered at SOAR.

Q. Is Walb Union accessible during their construction?

Answer: Yes, you can park in the parking garage closest to Walb Union and safely walk from the parking garage to Walb Union.

Q. What special accommodation services do you provide?

Answer: Students with disabilities requiring special accommodations during SOAR should contact Services for Students with Disabilities at Phone/TTD: 260-481-6657 at least two full weeks prior to their assigned session.

Q. Why are placement tests required?

Answer: All students are required to take writing and math placements tests unless they have already earned college level credit for an English or math course. At SOAR, your advisor will use your placement test results to assist you in the selection of the appropriate math and English courses for your first semester.

Q. What is FERPA?

Answer: Once you begin classes at IPFW, all of your records including, but not limited to, academic records, financial records, medical records, etc., are protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law, in working to protect your privacy, can appear to be a roadblock to family members or can work as a catalyst for parents and students to communicate about things like grades and bills. Specific questions about FERPA should be directed to the Registrar's Office at 260-481-6815.

Q. What is My.IPFW?

Answer: MyIPFW is the portal through which students access the online registration system, their e-mail accounts, links to financial aid and billing information, campus events, and academic information. Students must activate their MyIPFW account in order to reserve a seat at SOAR, take their Writing Self Placement, schedule their math placement test, and register for classes. Account activation is required for all students! The official mode of communication on campus is email.
