Statement of SOAR Advising Practice

During the morning and early afternoon sessions at SOAR, IPFW administrators, advisors, faculty and staff will meet in various sessions with groups of students and their families to share information that will be helpful to students in choosing their classes. Some of the topics that students and their families will learn about in these groups advising sessions include:

  • How to read and understand the Bulletin and Schedule of Classes.

  • How to interpret placement test scores and how to use those scores to choose appropriate courses.

  • What IPFW's six General Education Areas are and where to find the list of courses approved to meet IPFW's General Education Requirements.

  • What classes are suggested and appropriate for a freshman to take his/her first semester.

  • What Learning Communities are and why you should enroll in a Learning Community.

  • How many credits you will need to enroll in to be considered a full-time student.

  • What MAP-WORKS is and how it will help you to be more successful in college.

  • What to do if you have earned transfer credit, AP credit or have taken college level courses while a high school student.

  • What to do if you have taken two or more years of a foreign language in high school and you want to enroll in a foreign language class at IPFW.

  • How to choose appropriate classes for your first semester.

  • How to register for classes using MyIPFW.

  • How to schedule an appointment with your advisor.

Students and their families will use this information to choose appropriate classes for their first semester. Families are encouraged to attend the group advising sessions with their students and are also encouraged to provide input into their student's selection of classes.

After the group advising sessions, all family members are invited to return to Walb Union where there will be a break-out session with information specifically for the families of IPFW students.

While the family session is taking place, students will have a brief, individual meeting with an advisor who will review the student's choice of classes before the student registers. Students and their families will meet in Walb Union in late afternoon after the family session concludes and students have finished registration.
