Step 2: Create a Strategy

Full-time Students
(12 or more credit hours)

  • Understand that fewer credit hours may affect financial aid status and auto/health insurance

Schedules

  • Vary classes between MWF and TR
  • Schedule some breaks between classes
  • Balance work and class schedule
  • Work no more than 20 hours per week
  • Choose FYE Learning Communities for a great academic schedule

The First Semester

  • Meet with your academic advisor
  • Consider math options: out-of-class testing and/or flexible pacing
  • Complete some required developmental courses, if placement scores indicate need (ENG W129, COAS W111, MA 109/113)
  • Enroll in an FYE Learning Community
  • Seek free academic support early and often through CASA
  • Don’t drop classes without seeing your advisor and speaking with the Financial Aid office

Grades

  • Understand professors’ expectations: College is not like high school
  • Be committed to earning excellent grades from the beginning
  • Monitor your progress through your courses; keep a record of your grades
  • Realize how hard it is to raise a low GPA
  • Understand that your success is your responsibility
  • Use Academic Support Services: CASA, The SPOT, Writing Center, STEPS, SI
Future Semesters
  • See your advisor and register early to get the best choices; spring registration begins in November
  • Follow the requirements for your major
  • Be aware of prerequisites and sequencing of courses
