Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Society

Welcome to the IPFW Chapter web site.

Sigma Xi is an international, multidisciplinary research society whose programs and activities promote the health of the scientific enterprise and honor scientific achievement. Sigma Xi publishes the award-winning American Scientist magazine, awards hundreds of grants annually to promising student researchers and sponsors a variety of programs that serve science and society. Primary programmatic interests include research ethics, science and engineering education, the public understanding of science, international research networking and the overall health of the research enterprise.

Sigma Xi is an honor society, with membership by invitation only, although many of our local events and presentations are open to the general public.

This is the web site for the IPFW local chapter.

Upcoming Events

New!!!

The IPFW chapter of Sigma Xi is organizing Science Café events near campus!

The plan is to have a series of events where local scientists speak briefly on their work in a way accessible to a general audience, followed by question time and informal discussion groups in a café setting. This is part of a growing national Science Café network . Here's more on what to expect.

These events are FREE to attend and the public is specifically invited - no science background is assumed or required.

The latest programming plans will be announced right here on this page.

Stay tuned for more Science Café events, Winter/Spring 2010!!!

Talk Abstract:

  • Consumers demand capability to communicate anytime, anywhere, and at high data rates. No wireless system is able by itself to provide the ‘anywhere, anytime’ service desired, resulting in proliferation of wireless systems. In addition to the cellular systems, in recent years other wireless systems have appeared such as wireless local area networks, personal area networks, and metropolitan area networks.
Modern wireless systems are the result of a long process of technology evolution that started in the 1890’s. The culmination of this evolution is cognitive radio technology. Cognitive radio is one of the most important emerging disruptive technologies that will shape the future of the wireless communication and mobile computing industries.
In this talk we will cover the history of wireless technology, and we will also explore its evolution, and will identify key emerging directions.
