Background for Senate Document 06-17

Academic Regulations During a Campus Emergency

IPFW is developing an Emergency Preparedness Plan (http://www.ipfw.edu/avianflu/ or http://www.ipfw.edu/pandemic) in order to protect faculty/staff and students and arrange for the orderly suspension and resumption in delivery of academic programs and services as appropriate in case of a flu pandemic or other significant emergency.  The plan must allow for significant disruption in the academic calendar should the Chancellor, on the recommendation of the Allen County Health Commissioner, close campus and suspend classes for a period of time.   It must also seek to support students in the timely and appropriate completion of their academic program.

The purpose of this resolution is to allow for the VCAA (or designee), in consultation with Senate leadership (IU Speaker, Purdue Speaker, Presiding Officer), to make emergency policy changes related to the academic calendar (e.g., dates for late withdrawals from classes, time limits for removals of incompletes, and the like) to be in effect only during the campus emergency.
