Some concerns from the Psychology Department were brought to the committee’s attention.  MM agreed to set up a meeting with several members of that department.

We discussed CNET 450 – a proposed Area VI course.  There were a number of issues with the proposal and syllabus.

1.       The proposal is unclear about the problem solving, theory, substantive knowledge, and method developed.

2.       How is the text going to be used?

3.       What is the course description?

4.       How do the students do the final project?

5.       The final project is not well defined.  What is a sustainability report?

6.       There is no connection between the General Education outcomes and the course work (as listed on the syllabus).

The proposal was not accepted at this time.

The discussion about this proposal brought several issues:

1.       Proposal should only come forward for courses that have been approved.  This motion was approved by a 4-1 vote.

2.       Many of the proposals have not been reflective in the proposal and do not explain how the General Education outcomes are met in the course.  This calls for a revision of the proposal form to request that the appropriate rubric is completed with the proposal and that the narrative explain the rubric score.

The next meeting will be on February 9, 2010 at 10:30AM in SB176.  We will attempt to discuss the following course proposals.

First Meeting of the 2009-2010 academic year.

Elected Masters Chair.

Discussed the assessment report produced last year, briefly.

Discussed the issue of recertification of Area VI courses.

There is a logistics problem with the sheer number of courses that will need to be recertified.

One suggestion was that departments do the recertification or bundle proposals together through the department chairperson.

The idea of greater involvement of the chair is important and coincides with discussions last year about the need for chairs to make certain that General Education Courses are continuing in the “spirit” in which the courses were proposed and that chairs make certain that faculty are aware that they are teaching general education courses that have programmatic outcomes independent of the departmental outcomes.

Next meeting: Monday September 28 in Neff  140 at noon.

Agenda:

Continue discussions with new committee members.

Distribute course proposal rubrics

Distribute course proposals

Discussion of September 24 workshop.
