Retirement Program
Preface:
Probably the single highest athletic honor a player can
receive from his/her University is to have their number retired, and thus honor
their special achievements for all time.
In Division I, and especially at IPFW, we recognize the
clear tie between the student and the athlete.
This tie should remain with this new honor that could be given to a
student athlete.
Honor Criteria:
Playing Seasons
Must have played four seasons at IPFW in
the given sport.
Athletic
Recognized by team with honors such as
elected Team Captain or MVP for season.
Holds school athletic records.
Conference recognition such as Play of
the Week –or– Player of the Year.
Holds conference records
Recognized in NCAA individual statistics for a given
year(s) or career.
Exhibited team leadership and impact.
Academic
Complied with grade requirements every
semester.
Continued progress towards degree
completion every semester.
Academic awards such as special scholarship honors, Dean's
List, etc. a strong consideration.
Will graduate in final season or within a
reasonable time after last season of eligibility.
Consideration Process:
The head Coach must submit in writing to the Athletic
Director and the Faculty Athletic Representative the name and reasons for this
honor to be awarded.
The Athletic Director and the Faculty Athletic
Representative must jointly recommend this honor to the Subcommittee on
Athletics for their consideration.
The Subcommittee on Athletics must (by 2/3's vote) agree to
the honor.
The Athletic Director and the Faculty Athletic
Representative will then present the honor for consideration by the Chancellor.
Upon agreement by the Chancellor for the award, the honor
is eligible for presentation.
Presentation:
The actual presentation ceremony will take place at an
event chosen by the Athletic Director and the Coach for the best recognition to
accrue.
The actual award may be bestowed only after (or in the
final semester) all degree requirements have been met and the student will
graduate.
If there is a time gap from confirmation by the chancellor
and actual graduation, the head Coach is empowered to hold back the number from
use for the upcoming year(s)/season(s).
Summary:
The Athletic programs at IPFW have reached a level of
maturity that the consideration of number/jersey retirement becomes a reality.
The above criteria and procedure will insure that only the
best athletes (the "one of a kind") that are also good students who
will graduate from IPFW, and have been a four-year IPFW student will be
recognized with this very special honor.

We were asked to look at the school's athletic academic eligibility standards, which at two points in time are higher than the NCAA's. The last time this was discussed was before we became a D1 school.
