Senate Library Subcommittee

February 28, 2008, 9:00 a.m.

Minutes

Present:    A. Coffman (chair), L. Hite, K. Moustafa, K. Murphey, G. Wang,

              J. Violette

Absent:    B. Abbott, G. Miller, H. Oloomi

Chair Adam Coffman called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.  The minutes of the December 13, 2007 meeting were approved as distributed.

Old Business:

The subcommittee agreed to delay sending a letter to the chancellor (as proposed at the last meeting) since budget enhancements have been proposed for the library by the VCAA to cover both new programs and core databases.  J. Violette will forward the list of proposed databases and other materials budget requests to the subcommittee members.

In January the subcommittee members used e-mail to discuss and vote on two Special Needs requests for which the subcommittee had requested additional information.  The Engineering Department proposal was passed as revised.  The revised proposal from the School of Education was partially funded (consumables were not approved).

New Business:

The librarians submitted a revision of SD 97-6, the Library Collection Development Policy.  The new policy is more streamlined since most of the procedural information is removed.  The policy also takes into account the changing nature of library collections with emphasis on electronic access.  The Subcommittee members discussed then passed the document unanimously on a voice vote and forwarded it to the University Resources Policy Committee for action.

Announcements:

A. Coffman announced that the search committee for a new dean is currently conducting interviews by telephone and hopes to bring candidates to campus in mid-March with a decision by the beginning of April.  All library subcommittee members are encouraged to participate in the interviews.

J. Violette announced that initial work to remove the rooms on the 3rd floor will begin this spring.  All of the books and serials on the 2nd floor will be moved to the 3rd in order to make room for the new Learning Commons.

The next meeting of the Library Subcommittee will be in mid-April (date and time TBA) to discuss the spring round of Special Needs proposals.
