                        G. Wang, J. Violette

Absent:           B. Abbott, H. Oloomi

Chair Adam Coffman called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.  The minutes of the September 13, 2007 meeting were approved as distributed.

The Library Subcommittee reviewed reports from J. Violette comparing the library with those of peer institutions.  G. Miller moved (with a second by K. Moustafa) to send a letter to the chancellor, AOC, and the Senate regarding the deplorable state of library support on this campus.

The Subcommittee reviewed the Fall Special Needs proposals questioning especially videos targeted solely for teaching and requests for consumables, textbooks, and what appear to be dated resources.  J. Violette will prepare letters to be co-signed by the chair.  In one-third of the cases we will solicit additional information.  Departments will be asked to respond by the first week in January and the responses will be distributed to library subcommittee members for a final decision.

Senate Library Subcommittee

Sept. 13, 2007, 9:00 a.m.

Minutes

Present:  B. Arnold, A. Coffman, G. Miller, K. Murphey, G. Wang, J. Violette

Absent:  L. Hite, K. Moustafa, H. Oloomi

J. Violette called the meeting to order at 9:00.

Adam Coffman was elected chair by acclamation.

Library director Violette noted that the library had received no new funds to support the new programs approved over the past year.  The $614,131 materials budget does not even cover the current cost of serials and databases.  Ms. Violette also reviewed the status of the building addition (the Walb connector) and the renovation of the second floor into the Library Learning Commons.

The Think Helmke campaign is in full swing.  Posters, post-its, and buttons were available to subcommittee members to remind students that the library is here for them (online or in person).

iBidX will be introduced to the faculty this fall.  Subcommittee members were encouraged to try it and suggest improvements.  One such suggestion was a delete button!  http://ibidx.ipfw.edu

The next meeting of the subcommittee will be on December 13 at 9:00 unless essential agenda items require an additional meeting before then. At the December meeting the subcommittee will review the special needs requests for fall.
