Gen Ed learning outcomes.

Linking outcomes to course goals

Request Area VI faculty to send Syllabi for all area VI courses being taught.

Since Area VI has a final project, this would be an appropriate artifact.

Next fall we need to produce a rubric

During the meeting we discussed Bio 127 course proposal.  There were a number of issues with the proposal as it currently stands:

It does not discuss scientific inquiry.

It seems to be a list of diseases.

The requirements for research are not on syllabus.

Their goals are not clearly within the domain of Area II.

Too broad a coverage.

What they need is course learning objectives; scientific inquiry.

Will they teach understanding - an ability to interpret the data?

We also discussed assessment.  Erin brought some data from current area VI courses.  There were some questions about some of the larger enrollment Area VI courses and whether a 200 level course should be an area VI course.

A second memo will be written to collect syllabi from area VI for fall and give a heads up on the collection of artifacts

For Assessment we will

Collect artifacts from all area VI courses & every student, and then randomly sample these.

General Education Subcommittee Meeting 1-30-07

Attending:Margit Codispoti,  Mark Masters, Jonathan Tankel, Steve Sarratore, Ali Rassuli

Unable to attend:  Brenda Lundy, Hosni Abu-Mulaweh,  John Hrehov,

Actions:

Talk about American Democracy project proposal.

The proposal is incomplete and is missing the list of courses.

They are requesting that that we add to the core curriculum which we are reluctant to do.

The other part of the proposal included courses to add to the GenEd Area III.  However, these courses can be added by following the usual course proposal method.

Overall, the committee was reluctant to change the General Education program until assessment is complete and baccalaureate framework is complete.

Consider Bio 127 as an Area II course.

The committee was ambivalent as to whether this is really a Gen Ed course.  The course seems to include many different topics and be very focused with little or no relation to the general.

There were concerns w/ Journal/Magazine requirements being improbable or inaccessible.

We were concerned with the lack of the proposal on addressing scientific thought.

General Education Subcommittee Meeting 12-8-06

Attending:Margit Codispoti, Brenda Lundy, Mark Masters, Jonathan Tankel

Unable to attend:  Hosni Abu-Mulaweh,  John Hrehov, Steve Sarratore, Ali Rassuli

Actions:

Talk about ordering of topics:

Pedagogical framework first.  Then address assessment.

Look at INTL209 area III course proposal

Course objectives are not supported from syllabus.  How are these objectives met?  In particular, bullets 2, 4 & 5.

The course goals are a direct copy from GenEd guidelines.

The course seems to be too specific for GenEd

Send back to Roberts, justify/support the Course objectives.  Disconnect between syllabus & objectives.

ECON 328 Area VI course proposal.

Game theory as a science?

Project is missing from course and the course overall seems to be weak.  More like a 100 level course.

Where is the synthesis?

There is no apparent tie in to the movies.

No objectives, no outcomes.
