Minutes of General Education Subcommittee for November 17, 2005
Attending: Gary Blumenshine, Mark Masters, Ali Rassuli, Sami Tannous, Jonathan Tankel,
Not able to attend: John Hrehov, Brenda Lundy, Steven Sarratore
We discussed two course proposals: I208 and E200.
I208 was approved as a Area IV course with the suggestion that the title be changed to be more descriptive and more in agreement with the course description, i.e. “Intl. Cinema and Culture:”
There was a great deal of discussion about E200. The main issue was that the goals of the course are not clearly stated on the syllabus. Nor was there a relation of how the course material relates to the course goals. The syllabus needs to articulate why this course is a general education course to the students.
These ideas were forwarded to George Bullion.

We discussed PSY 353 area VI proposal. Overall, the proposal was acceptable. However, there was disagreement on whether the research proposal would provide sufficient synthesis. We tabled the proposal until the next meeting for more discussion.

Accepted minutes from 9-22-05
We unanimously approved a draft proposal regarding the requirement of students to complete area VI course on campus. We forwarded the proposal to the Educational Policy committee through Jonathan Tankel.
We finished reviewing Econ 200 area III course proposal. We decided that we wanted additional information showing how the course satisfies are III, how the service learning component relates to the class, and what the differences are between the distance learning section and the live section.
We approved PSY 225 as an Area III course.

Minutes of General Education Subcommittee for September 22, 2005
Attending: Brenda Lundy, Mark Masters, Ali Rassuli, Steven Sarratore, Jonathan Tankel, Sami Tannous, John Hrehov
Not able to attend: Gary Blumenshine,
We approved the minutes of September 7 meeting with corrections correcting the misspelling of IPFW.
We had three pending course proposals to review from the last meeting.
We started discussion with PSY 353. There was some discussion of how it met the criteria of Area VI. In particular, consensus formed around needing more information about the option of writing a research proposal to satisfy the project requirement. Further consideration of the proposal was tabled until we had a clarification of the research proposal.
We discussed and approved Biology 349 as a General Education Area VI course.
We started consideration of Economics 200. The proposal was from the distance learning section of the course. The course would be general education whether it was distance learning or not. The committee was unclear how the course met the General Education Criteria for Area III. There was concern about how the service learning aspect of the course ties into the course.
The meeting adjourned.

Minutes of General Education Subcommittee for September 7, 2005

Elected Mark Masters Chair of Committee
We briefly discussed that we need to move forward with assessment of the General Education Program this year.
The VCAA gave us a rousing pep talk as she walked past and told us what she believed should be considered General Education
Steve distributed three course proposals to be discussed in the next meeting and an issue regarding the transfer of classes that may count as General Education Area VI courses.
The problem was that Ivy Tech offers a course PSY 240. This course is similar in content to the IPFW course PSY 444. However PSY 444 is a General Education Area VI course. The question before the committee was “Could a transfer course satisfy our Area VI requirement.” We discussed the issue considering that an Area VI course is a supposed to be a capstone type of course for General Education and we are also considering using Area VI for assessment purposes.
Our conclusion on a unanimous vote was that General Education Area VI must be completed at IPFW and cannot be transferred.
“All students completing a Baccalaureate degree at IPFW must complete an Area VI General Education Course at IPFW.”
We will have to amend SD 99-25 since this is not an academic regulations issue.
Next meeting scheduled for 10:30AM on October 6 in KT 178
