International Services Advisory Subcommittee Minutes

October 28, 2004

Classroom-Medical 208

Present: Jane Ehle, Linda Fox, Paul Lin, Connell Nelson, Susan Skekloff, James Toole (chair), Marietta Wolczacka.

1. The minutes of last month’s meeting were approved.

2. Connell Nelson informed the committee of developments in the Office of International Services. Among these was the current move of the Office of International Services from Walb to Kettler. The Office is housed for the time being in Kettler G73 but will soon move to its permanent location in Kettler 108.

3. Connell and others also informed the committee of upcoming events of interest.

4. In the discussion that followed, it was suggested that one of the main tasks of the committee could be to help in the assessment of the Office of International Services. It was also suggested that the committee could be useful in helping to think of ways in which the international student presence at IPFW could help to make the university more of an engine of job creation for the region.

5. One important problem that was raised concerned the admission of international students to graduate programs. At the moment, some IPFW graduate programs lose international students to other campuses because they cannot yet offer full-time course loads at the graduate level. It was suggested that this is a problem for which the committee might help propose solutions. One part of a solution might rest with distance education, which could be used to help raise an on-campus part-time load to full-time.

6. In response to a question, two good ways to spread the news about upcoming events relevant to international students and international studies were identified. Those with events to publicize should contact Sara Stoneburner, of CASA, at 481-6060 and Ruby Cain, who is affiliated with the Urban League, at ruby@ctrainingexcellence.com.

7. Committee members were encouraged to send agenda items for future meetings to the chair. Meetings will be held when agenda items suggest a need for them.

The committee adjourned at approximately 2:35. Should a meeting be required before the end of the semester, it will be held on December 2 at 1:30 in the same location.

Respectfully submitted,

James Toole
