Developmental Studies Subcommittee Minutes

September 7, 2004

Present: Rachelle Darabi, Karol Dehr, Jerry Garrett, James Haw, Dianna Zook

Absent: Terry Jo Swim

• Attendees introduced themselves. New committee members include Karol Dehr and Jerry Garrett.

• Rachelle briefly described the past activities and duties of the Subcommittee. We referred to the Senate Bylaws for clarification.

• Members discussed the necessity of convening the subcommittee because much of what has been done in the past with the subcommittee is currently being handled by other committees across campus.

• Upon further discussion, two items of concern emerged as possible areas of consideration for the subcommittee:

• An examination of the prerequisite classes for IPFW students and whether or not our current registration procedures are effectively blocking ineligible students from entering upper level classes.

• An examination of the current math and English placement exams and whether or not they adequately test and place incoming students in their appropriate courses.

• Doug Townsend and Yvonne Zubovic were mentioned as possible replacements for Rebecca Konkin who can no longer serve on the subcommittee. Dianna will contact them.

• Rachelle will check with Diane Bezdon with Banner about the registration process and with the testing office about placement tests.

• Karol will check with Ed Moritz, Director of the Writing Program, about whether or not our developmental writing students are being placed correctly in our writing courses, based on the current placement tests.

• Jerry Garrett was elected to serve as chair of the subcommittee. Karol volunteered to record the minutes.

• A tentative meeting date of September 23 was set.
