SUBCOMMITTEE ON ATHLETICS

10-11-01

Members present:  K. Balthaser, E. Blumenthal, H. Broberg, P. Farrell, K. Hartley, B. Lohmuller, K. McDonald, D. Oberstar, M. Pope, J. Robinson, D. Young

Minutes of the 9-06-01 meeting were approved.

AD Mark Pope spoke to the committee on a number of activities and initiatives in the athletic department.

PASS (), in conjunction with SACS, has been instituted to help student athletes become acclimated to the university experience academically.  All freshmen, transfer as well as ongoing athletes below 2.5 overall or the previous semester.

The Soccer Showcase in August was a break-even event as a result of much effort put into publicity and fund generation.  The AD is persuaded that the event must be done in conjunction with the community, especially the soccer community, with an organizing committee format.

There has been some reorganization in the athletic department.  Financial and certain administrative items have been delegated to others who report back to the AD.

Greater effort has been put into establishing a better relationship with the media and the result has been improved coverage.

The department has put together an advertising package which has been marketed.  The response thus far has been modest.

Talks have been held with the NCAA about the eight year moratorium on post-season play.  Arguments have been provided to demonstrate how this moratorium is a death knell for a new Division I basketball program.  A response from the NCAA should be forthcoming.

A strategy is being mobilized to put IPFW's athletic programs before three conferences to initiate discussions about the viability of IPFW as a member.

A new initiative with the Royal Dons to garner greater financial support for the athletic program kicks off October 15.

A gala event is being put together for the men's basketball game against Moorehead State at the Coliseum November 16.

? The 2001-02 athletic schedules were approved.

Next meeting:  November 8      9:00 AM
