Subject: Minutes of meeting of October 5, 1999
Present: Solomon Isiorho, as Chair, Avon Crismore, Martha Weatherford,
Rachelle Darabi, Wen Hue Tsai, and Barbara Waters
Report of September Activities:
-
Barbara conducted two workshops for international students (Options after
graduation; Permission to work & adjusting to life). Upcoming workshops
will be held Oct. 11, Oct. 25, Nov. 8 and Dec. 6, 1999.
-
Barbara spoke at various departmental faculty meetings.
-
Barbara gave a presentation on dealing with cross-cultural issues to the
Fort Wayne Airport volunteers.
-
Barbara posted a notice seeking permanent residents, refugees and asylees
to serve as foreign language translators to meet the increased community
demand.
Discussion:

Status of international survey
-
Discussion of ways to deal with the shortage of assistance (only have one
half-time secretary).
Topics for Future Discussion:
-
Ascertain the progress of the Indiana State Dept. of Education in taking
Indiana Higher Education abroad.

Develop faculty international cultural awareness through exchange programs.
-
Seek means to employ work study students to conduct web search and to enter
data from the international interest survey.
Assignments
-
Barbara will send a draft of the AInternational
Interest Survey to IPFW Faculty and Staff@
to the members of the Subcommittee for their review and comment before
distribution. The intent is to send out the survey by the end of October,
1999, with the results tallied by November, 1999.

Martha agreed to assist by typing the final draft of the survey.

Barbara will call Barbara Blauvelt regarding e-mailing as well as having
labels printed so we are certain to reach all faculty members (including
part-time) and staff.

Rachelle offered the assistance of one of her work study students to research
the web concerning AInternational
Studies@ at all Indiana institutions.

A student representative was found but was unable to attend due to employment
at the library. Solomon will ask the library to arrange her schedule to
accommodate future meetings.

Need to locate information about the short-term exchange grants for faculty
(similar to those available at IUB).
-
Need to locate information about the distinguished scholar program.

Solomon Isiorho was chosen as Chair.

Decision was made to invite Phil Kennell to the next meeting to discuss
the history of the advisory committee.

Discussion was conducted concerning role of the committee and number of
members needed to fulfill the by-laws.

Present: Solomon Isiorho, as Chair, Avon Crismore, Martha Weatherford,

Phil Kennell (guest), and Barbara Waters

Phil Kennell reported on interactions with the advisory committee for the
past ten years.

It was determined that two new members will be needed, one to replace John
Bell (retiring) and another to fill an open faculty position.
-
Recommendations were sought for a student representative and members agreed
to approach potential candidates.
