- Carl called the meeting to order at 2:30 pm.
- Minutes of the October, 1998 meeting were approved.
- Pam Lewin was introduced to the committee and brought us Aup to speed@ on the women=s soccer program at IPFW. There are 15 currently students interested in playing and Pam hopes to add 5-10 recruits to this number. She is meeting many area coaches and is doing some travel for recruiting. Pam also works in the fitness/wellness program for IPFW.
- Elliott talked about student athletes missing classes. He feels the best method of dealing with faculty who object to athletic misses is for him to talk to the faculty member directly. Elliott has had some good success with this and prefers doing this and not making an issued of it.
- Judy Tillapaugh will put together information on the Senior Women=s Administrator position for our next meeting.
- Butch discussed dealing with student athletes problems. Although he is comfortable in how we are dealing with problems, a written document will be prepared.
- Probable speaker for the scholarship fund is General Norman Schwartzkof, in April, 1999 and Lady Thatcher in April, 2000.
- Carl distributed a packet of information on the NCAA Compliance Review. He discussed our Anext step@ with a time line for completing the implementation of the review of March, 1999.
- Dave S. updated the committee on compliance efforts with the computer and notes we have solved the >dropped@ classes problem.
- Charles Washington requested a SCOA tour of the IPFW Community Park. All those interested meet at the Gates Center on Friday, November 20, at 2:30 pm. Butch will get a van.
NEXT MEETING: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1998 - 2:30 PM
Guest: Tony Vittorio
- Carl Drummond called the meeting to order at 2:40 pm
- A review of the minutes from September 4, 1998 were reviewed and David
- Tony spoke to the group about his baseball program, both on the field
and in the classroom ie, study tables, GPA=s,
class
attendance, etc. Tony expressed his concerns regarding class
excuses from professors for missing classes due to games.
He expressed that the baseball team missed more classes than
any other sport program due to so many games scheduled
(56). Questions and answers followed.
- Carl asked Elliott to talk in place of Butch, Judy, and Dave. He talked
briefly about student athletes missing classes due to
games. He feels this is getting better and the student athletes
have to take more responsibility in getting this done in a timely
manner. Elliott talked briefly about the GLVC meetings.
- Kim McDonald discussed the senior women=s
administrator position being added to SCOA as an official member. The
Student Affairs Committee does not want to make a decision regarding
this matter until more information is collected. The
committee wants to know what the Senior Women=s
Administrator position is and would like a job description. Is this an
IPFW or NCAA requirement? Kim asked if this needed to go to
the Rules Committee. She asked that we collect this
information and present it at the next meeting.
- Carl asked if anyone would volunteer to serve on the eligibility committee.
Kim McDonald and David Oberstar volunteered. The eligibility subcommittee will be composed of Kim, David O. and Carl.
- Some thoughts for Butch and Judy: does the athletic department
have any guidelines or procedures for informal
complaints from our student athletes? Does it start in the athletic
department? Do we have a committee? Carl would like
discussion regarding this matter at the next meeting.
- Meeting adjourned at 3:30 pm.
