Present: Pat Ashton, Ken Balthaser, Deb Conklin, Jack Dahl, Steve Hollander, Kim McDonald, Mike O=Hear, Mike Stockstill, Dan Zimmerman.
Pat Ashton was nominated for chair by Steve Hollander, seconded by Jack Dahl. He was unanimously elected chair by the committee.
Pat recommended that a listserv be created to include campus-wide members with interests in distance education and incorporating technology in teaching. Discussion lead the committee to believe that this would be a beneficial way to make the IPFW community more aware of programs and resources on campus. Pat asked that names of key individuals be sent to him for inclusion on the listserv. There will be a general announcement to solicit members as well.
Ken Balthaser reported that the new video teleconferencing studio in Kettler could be completed by summer 1999. Currently time slots available for additional use of teleconferencing meetings or classes is very limited. Evening time have been used almost exclusively by programs such as the doctoral program from IUB, the Adult Education program from IUPUI, the Library Science program from IUB and the Labor Studies program from IUB. Technical support for additional programs is an issue as well.
It was announced that IPSE (Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education) will be sponsoring a distance education workshop at Indiana State University in Terre Haute Nov. 4 and 5. Continuing Education has agreed to pay for two faculty members to attend. There was an announcement on the Bulletin Board. Those interested should contact CE.
Comments were made regarding other groups on campus that will provide leadership in areas relative to distance learning initiatives. Vice Chancellor Susan Hannah is organizing a distance learning coordinating committee and Asst. Vice Chancellor Jeanette Clausen is heading a committee for enhancement of learning and teaching.
In conclusion, the chair outlined three step action steps the committee could pursue:
1. Create an IFPW distance learning/ technology listserv
2. Identify existing IFPW distance learning/technology resources and
projects
3. Invite the VCAA and Asst. VCAA to talk with the committee regarding
the scope and work of the Distance Learning Coordinating Committee and
CELT (Center for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching.
The chair agreed to contact Dr. Hannah regarding a meeting time to discuss distance learning and to call the next meeting tentatively on October 19.
