Senate Document SD 86-23
(Amended & Approved, 4/20/1987)

TO: The Senate

FROM: Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Academic Structure Subcommittee

DATE: April 6, 1987

SUBJECT: Chancellor's Memoranda: Academic Reorganization [3/16/1987] and The Reorganization Plan [3/23/1987]

DISPOSITION: Upon approval, to the presiding officer for implementation

I. Director/Division

Whereas, The title, Director, leads to ambiguity about the responsibilities of the officers of each major academic unit on campuses other than IPFW and in the community,
Be It Resolved, That Directors be designated as Deans and the Divisions designated as Schools.
II. Director Appointments
Whereas, The Reorganization Plan (March 23, 1987) appoints a Director of the new Division of Business Administration. This appointment bypasses the expected faculty participation in the selection process and is contrary to the recommendation of the Senate, creating a Director who is also a Division/Department Chair,
Be It Resolved, That Representative Search and Screen Committees be formed of faculty members from each discipline in the Divisions of Fine and Performing Arts, Business Administration and Health Sciences to review and recommend candidates for the position of Director of each Division.
III. Division Names
Whereas, The title "Division of Business Administration" obscures the missions of Supervision and Consumer and Family Sciences to prospective students and faculty,
Be It Resolved, That the Division of Business Administration be entitled "Division of Business and Management Sciences," or the departments of Supervision and Consumer and Family Sciences not be reassigned from their current affiliation with Engineering and Technology.
IV. Governance
A.
Whereas, The newly created divisions have no self-governance in place,
Be It Resolved, That the Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Faculty convene all new divisions urging each to establish governance procedures for each division. A sample resolution dealing with the Division of Arts and Sciences is attached.
B.
Whereas, Certain academic units (Medical Education, Library, Labor Studies, and SPEA) have been omitted from the Academic Reorganization.
Be It Resolved, That the Rules Committee of the faculty Senate study the role of these units in any future of Faculty Governance and make specific recommendations concerning their representation and participation.
