Senate Document SD 90-28
(Approved, 4/8/1991)
To: Ken Balthaser, Chair, CUAS
From: Jack C. Dahl, Planning & Registrar
Subject: Resolution by the Committee
Date: February 4, 1991

Whereas, the Computing Across the Curriculum Task Force established as its highest priority statement of need the development of a university commitment to faculty in support of the development and implementation of computing in the curricula; and

Whereas, one means suggested by the CACTF for implementation of this commitment was to "consider the development and implementation of computing into coursework as meritorious and appropriate accomplishment for promotion, tenure, and reappointment;" and

Whereas, the Goals and Objectives for the IPFW Baccalaureate Degree included "use of information technologies for qualitative and quantitative work" as one of the Foundation Skills that is included in the Core of General Education; and

Whereas, the respective school and division criteria statements approved by the Senate may have included only limited mention of computer-related activities;

Therefore, be it resolved, That the Senate encourage departments, divisions, and schools at IPFW to reexamine promotion and tenure criteria and give appropriate consideration to the following scholarly activities:

1. Creation of new courses or modification of course content to incorporate use of computers in ways that foster computer literacy as a criterion of either teaching or departmental service.
2. Development of software, with appropriate methods of evaluation, as an activity that is an appropriate means of satisfying criteria for teaching, research, or service.
