Senate Document SD 97-7 (Amended & approved, 12/8/1997)

TO: IPFW Faculty Senate

FROM: Purdue Faculty Grievance Board
W. Jeffrey Wilson, Chair

DATE: November 21, 1997

SUBJECT: Response to Revision of Purdue University Executive Memorandum C-19 regarding Grievance Procedures

DISPOSITION: To the Presiding Officer for Implementation

Whereas, the faculty of IPFW were not consulted about the final form of the revised procedures specified in C-19; and

Whereas, the revisions increase the disparity between grievance procedures for Indiana University and Purdue University faculty at IPFW; and

Whereas, the revised procedures will likely treble the number of faculty serving on grievance-related committees, and

Whereas, the revised procedures require that hearings be closed unless both the initiator and the respondent request otherwise; and

Whereas, the revised procedures preclude even collegial representation of the grievant at the hearing; and

Whereas, the revised procedures require that the audio tapes be held by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs rather than by the chair of the Hearing Panel, and

Whereas, the revised procedures do not address the issue of publication of the report containing the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the Hearing Panel,

Therefore be it resolved that the IPFW Faculty rejects the revised procedures; and

Furthermore be it resolved that the Faculty Affairs Committee be charged with working with President Beering or his designee to construct and implement procedures that address the concerns raised herein and that address the special circumstances of the dual campus in Fort Wayne.
