SUBJECT: Amendment to SD 99-25, General Education at IPFW
DISPOSITION: To the Presiding Officer for implementation
WHEREAS, SD 99-25 (as amended) defines the current General Education requirements for all IPFW Baccalaureate students; and
WHEREAS, to fulfill Area VI requirements, courses A[s]hould require students to demonstrate the ability to gather, evaluate, select, organize, and synthesize material in order to complete a research or creative project. To this end, area VI courses should require completion of a project that involves planning, research, and presentation in an appropriate medium;@ and
WHEREAS, courses equivalent to Area VI transferred to IPFW are evaluated for transfer credit based on course content and not course administration; and
WHEREAS, it is therefore possible that a student may transfer to IPFW and receive transfer credit for a course as an Area VI course that does not satisfy the Area VI criteria required by SD 99-25;
BE IT RESOLVED, that SD 99-25 be amended, effective with the publication of the next Undergraduate Bulletin (2008-2010), as follows (new language underlined):
The General Education requirement for bachelor degree programs shall consist of 33 credits, as defined below, with specific exemptions as noted. One approved general education course in the major discipline may be counted toward fulfillment of Areas II‑V. All students completing a bachelor degree program at IPFW must complete the AREA VI General Education Course at IPFW.
