Office of the Chancellor
MEMORANDUM
To: The Fort Wayne Senate
From: Michael A. Wartell, Chancellor
Subject: Athletics Report for 2006
Date: December 4, 2006
In response to SD 03-19, I am providing the enclosed report. The report generally follows the structure of the information request, with some adjustments to simplify the presentation of the information.
Some highlights from last year and this fall are shown below:
IPFW was accepted into the Mid-Continent Conference, beginning Fall 2007.
15 sports (all except Men's Volleyball) will compete in the conference and will be immediately eligible to compete for Mid-Con Championships and post-season tournaments. Men=s Volleyball will continue to compete in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
IPFW Student-Athletes earned an average GPA above 3.0 for the third consecutive year.
Men's Volleyball won the MIVA Tournament and played in the Final Four. Attendance for the season ranked third in the nation.
Men=s Basketball played the University of Notre Dame in the Memorial Coliseum on December 18, 2005, in front of nearly 9000 fans - by far the largest crowd to witness an IPFW Athletics event in Fort Wayne. Notre Dame won the game 65-63.
Women's Volleyball attendance was the highest of all Mid-Con teams. The Women's team completed its fourth straight season of 22 or more victories.
Women's Basketball started a new tradition: "Hoopla: Celebrating Women in Basketball" with a doubleheader at the Memorial Coliseum, including Purdue, Valparaiso and Northern Iowa.
The Women's Cross-Country Team has won the "Intercollegiate Cross-Country Academic All-American Team with Distinction" award for four straight years. The team average GPA of 3.57 in the Fall Semester placed the team 14th in the country.
Women=s Soccer won the United Soccer Conference Tournament.
