SUBJECT:            Concerns regarding promotion and tenure issues

DISPOSITION:    For information only

The Executive Committee has reviewed the current promotion and tenure policies and practices with faculty leaders and administrators and has sent the following concerns to the Faculty Affairs Committee.  We are bringing these concerns to the attention of the Senate for information only.

In the case of minority votes at any level, current policies do not give adequate means for communicating the reasons for such votes.

Current membership rules allow a department chair or department faculty member to serve on the campus committee and review cases from his/her department.  The concern here is that the department chair is in a position to promote cases from his/her department which may leave other cases without such advocates at a disadvantage.  A lesser concern is that the chair has already had an opportunity to review such cases, and a second opportunity is not afforded to other members of promotion and tenure committees.

Given current practice which allows certain activities to be counted in multiple areas (teaching, research, and service), a concern has been raised that this may diminish promotion and tenure standards.
