Minutes of the Student Affairs Committee

February 27, 2002

Present:            John Berry, Charles Champion, Margit Codispoti, Solomon Isiorho, Edna Neal (ex officio), Deborah Ross

We discussed an item of business brought to us from the Subcommittee on Athletics (SCOA).  Kim McDonald was present to discuss a proposal to change the reporting relationship between the Compliance Officer, the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR), and SCOA.  The reason for this change is that the move to Division I will bring with it added responsibilities.  After deliberating, the committee suggested that provision should be made for a deputy Faculty Representative so that there would not be a vacuum if the FAR should resign unexpectedly.  In addition, the committee felt that there should be an indirect reporting relationship between the Compliance Coordinator and the FAR, and between the FAR and the Athletic Director.  Kim McDonald indicated that she would take these suggestions back to SCOA and would prepare a formal document by our next scheduled meeting.

We also discussed a concern brought to the Chair by the student representative, John Berry, regarding the unpaved parking lot next to the river.  It was decided that the Chair would seek clarification of the situation from the Vice Chancellor for Financial Affairs.

Next date and time is scheduled for March 20 at 2:00 in SB 176.  The chair indicated that she would not be able to attend that meeting.  Solomon Isiorho indicated that he would be willing to serve as temporary chair.

Minutes of the Student Affairs Committee

January 30, 2002

Present:            John Berry, Charles Champion, Margit Codispoti,  Linda Fox, Solomon Isiorho, Edna Neal (ex officio), Deborah Ross, Brent Wake

The following issues were discussed for information only:

A review of the student complaint process is being conducted by representatives of the administration and several Senate committees.

Planning is proceeding for Student Housing.

Student complaints regarding space for quiet study and for adequate office space for student organizations were discussed.

The location of ashtrays and benches near campus buildings was discussed.  These areas serve as natural meeting places for students.  If they are located next to offices, the noise can be a distraction to people working in those offices.  Of particular concern is the area in the corner of the geogarden in front of the entrance to Kettler Hall.  Ways to make these areas less attractive were discussed.  It was decided that the Chair would send a letter to Dave Danielson informing him of this problem and suggesting that benches and ashtrays be moved an appropriate distance from the entrances to campus buildings so that noise can be minimized.

Meeting dates and times for the rest of the semester were scheduled:

                        February 27, 2:00

                        March 20, 2:00
