J. Violette

Guests:      T. Adkins, P. Sandstrom

The minutes of the October 24, 2003 meeting were approved as distributed.

Announcements:

J. Violette distributed a summary table of this year’s Special Needs Funds requests.  The Library Subcommittee will review the requests at the next meeting.  J. Violette will distribute copies of the applications along with Larry Griffin’s notes prior to the meeting.

J. Violette distributed a copy of the draft resolution on serials costs prepared by a faculty member in Bloomington that will go to the Bloomington Faculty Council in early March and later this spring to the University Faculty Council.  The Subcommittee will consider the resolution at the next meeting.

Indiana University Libraries have now hired a database negotiator for system‑wide license agreements.  The goal is to provide better access to databases across the system with better administrative efficiency.

Library renovation of the second floor is nearly complete.  The ITPC has agreed to use student technology funds to purchase modular group study units for the second floor.  Space for four groups will be provided initially.  We will renovate the space vacated on the first floor by moving DDS staff closer to the Service Desk and by creating a suite of offices for reference librarians.  We will also add more reference consulting areas.  A library addition has been approved by the Purdue Board of Trustees.  If funding is provided by the next legislature and required local funds are raised, the addition will be ready in 2008.

Information Literacy

Pamela Sandstrom, Head of Reference and Information Services, and Tiff Adkins, Reference Librarian and Outreach Coordinator, provided an update to the library’s instructional activities and a sneak preview of the library instruction modules currently under development.

The librarians were reluctant to change the information literacy resolution in any way that would appear to add a burden on faculty.  Instead, librarians are emphasizing the partnership between faculty and librarians that will improve teaching and learning.  In fact, the program is now renamed the Librarian‑Faculty Information Literacy Partnership.

The library staff have targeted specific courses that include a major writing or research component.  Library guides to appropriate sources of information will be prepared for all of these courses in conjunction with the faculty who teach them.

Assessment will be handled in three ways: 1) instructional modules under development will include pre‑ and post‑tests; 2) evaluations and assessment of the general education program will necessarily include information literacy (which is buried under "computer literacy" in the general education requirements); and 3) librarians will work with individual departments to integrate information literacy assessment with program review and assessment activities.

J. Violette asked the Subcommittee to consider what to do next: drop the resolution?  Or send it fourth "for information only"?  What suggestions do the subcommittee members have for selecting appropriate courses for librarians to target?

The next meeting of the subcommittee will be on Monday, March 22 at 2:30 in room 419.

Senate Library Subcommittee

Minutes

Friday, Sept. 19, 2003

11:00 a.m., LB 419

Present:    A. Crismore, S. Hartman, L. Hite, D. Mueller, D. Oberstar, J. Violette

Absent:    J. Jackson, C. Kracher, K. Murphey

The meeting was called to order by J. Violette.  Introductions were made.

David Oberstar was elected chair for 2003‑2004.

The minutes of the meeting of April 4, 2003 were approved as distributed.

Library director J. Violette reported that

The library’s materials budget is flat for the 5th consecutive year and has resulted in serials cancellations.  Gifts, grants, and the endowment helped cover materials purchases.

Renovations are underway on the second floor and things will be torn up and somewhat out of order for the duration of the fall semester.

The Science Information Center on the 4th floor now houses books, reference materials, and all science journals with call numbers Q through Z.

The Indiana University Libraries are working to establish a common pool of funds for purchase of databases that are shared throughout the system.

IUCAT enhancements include My Account that allows a user to see what they have checked out and to renew items, e‑mail notification (which will be the only notifications after this year), and in November "request delivery," a new direct request system from within the catalog.

Old Business

D. Oberstar will check on the status of the Information Literacy resolution sent to the University Resources Policy Committee last spring.

New Business

Subcommittee members Crismore and Violette attended presentations at IUPUI on institutional repositories and on open access.  The Subcommittee will discuss these issues later and consider bringing open access advocate Dr. Peter Suber (Earlham College) to campus along with retired faculty member Dr. Fred Jehle for a forum sometime this year.

Next meeting

The next meeting of the Subcommittee will be on Friday, October 24 at 11:00.
