(Failed, 3/13/2006)

To:   Fort Wayne Senate

From:  Peter Iadicola

Senator Representative for the Department of Sociology

Date:  March 13, 2006

Subject:  Senate Resolution Pertaining to the Assessment of IPFW's move to Division I

Whereas, as noted in Senate Document 00-10, the faculty senate at IPFW withheld its support for the move to Division I athletics until such time has been given the data necessary for making an informed decision.

Whereas, the IPFW Division I program has been operating for at least 4 years and there is more data available for the Senate to make an informed decision regarding support of the move to Division I.

Whereas, according to the Budgetary Affairs Subcommittee the operating and actual budgets have exceeded the projected budgets for each of these past four budget years (2000-04).

Whereas the feasibility studies conducted by Athletic Director Bowman dated May 8th and September 5, 2000 in support of the university's move from Division II to Division I athletic program specified a number of benefits many of which may be now measurable.

Be it resolved that the University Resources Policies Committee in consultation with the Budgetary Affairs Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on Athletics conduct a 5 year assessment of the Division I athletic program using the both metrics approved in Senate Document SD 03-19, the list of rationale and benefits listed in the feasibility studies and listed in Budgetary Affairs Subcommittee Report dated November 17, 2000, solicitation of faculty and student comments through conducting at least two campus-wide meetings and this report be submitted to the Senate no later than the March 2007 meeting of the senate.
