WHEREAS, Senate Document SD 85‑18 (Section 5.2) defines what is permissible during the Final Week of each semester or session; and
WHEREAS, section 5.2 does not take into account changes in the delivery of classroom instruction and the administration of examinations due to technological and pedagogical innovation,
WHEREAS, the faculty and students need uniform regulations that take into account these changes;
BE IT RESOLVED, That the Senate approve the following changes to Senate Document SD 85‑18, (Section 5.2) (new language in bold)
5.0 FINAL EXAMINATIONS AND INSTRUCTORS' GRADE REPORTS
5.2 Final
week. With the
exception of those courses classified as individual instruction, clinic,
studio, practice teaching, or research, or distance courses and
those offered for zero credits, each class is expected to will
meet for a two-hour session during the last week of each fall or spring
semester. The two-hour session is to be used for (1) a final examination, (2)
a last, non-comprehensive examination, or (3) a regular class meeting.
Instructors may substitute take-home finals or term papers in lieu of the scheduled two-hour session. Such assignments shall be due during examination week, no earlier than the start of the scheduled final two-hour session for the course. In such cases, substantial student-faculty contact must continue into examination week, and faculty are expected to be available for students enrolled in the course through the end of the scheduled examination time for that course.
