Safe Zone Workshops
2008-09 Safe Zone Training
Safe Zone training is designed to raise awareness and broaden understanding of colleagues and students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered (LGBT). Workshop participants are encouraged to identify their own personal characteristics and “scripts” that help them authentically empathize with LGBT individuals. The workshops include:
- Language and symbols of the LGBT movement
- Timeline—place yourself in GLBT history
- Social identity theory
- Homophobia in the context of civil and human rights
- Common elements of oppression and unique aspects of homophobia
- Sources of information and support on campus and in the community
- How to be an ally for GLBT students and colleagues
The workshop leaders are Leslie Raymer, faculty in Women's Studies and associate faculty in Women’s Studies, and Patricia Turner, a local advocate for LGBT communities of color.
