Lugar Scholars Program

Want to spend the fall semester working for Senator Richard Lugar in Washington, D.C.?

If you do, then the Richard G. Lugar Scholars of International Affairs Program may be for you.

What is the Richard G. Lugar Scholars of International Affairs Program?
Senator Richard Lugar has witnessed the birth of democracies firsthand as an election observer, has led the effort to destroy Russian nuclear weapons, and has addressed many international concerns.  He was the original author of the African Growth and Opportunity Act and played a key role in the ratification of the START I, START II, and INF treaties.  He also has been at the forefront of the effort to expand NATO.  His statesmanship and knowledge of international affairs have earned him the respect of members of both parties.

In tribute to Senator Lugar’s tireless efforts to bring Indiana back to a position of prominence regarding international affairs, IPFW will name one IPFW students and one IPFW faculty member the Richard G. Lugar Scholars of International Affairs.

What does a Richard G. Lugar Student Scholar of International Affairs do?
The student scholar will serve as an intern during the fall semester in Senator Lugar’s offices and for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  During the fall semester, the student will earn six credit hours for the internship and three credit hours for directed readings with the Lugar Faculty Scholar related to the Faculty Scholar’s research agenda.  If the student scholar desires to maintain a full-time course load, an online course or video course may be added for a maximum of 12 credit hours.  During the spring semester, the student will be a paid research assistant for the Lugar Faculty Scholar and will be expected to work up to 20 hours per week.

Who can be a Richard G. Lugar Student Scholar of International Affairs?
This award is available to all full-time students who have completed at least 60 credit hours, but no more than 90 credit hours by the end of the semester in which the award is made.
