1. The exam will provide a number of quotes taken from the course readings. You will be asked to identify the authors of the quotes.

2. In addition, you will be asked to write essays on two of the quotes explaining the significance of the author’s argument for the American political tradition.

3. Finally, you will write a major essay based on the following:

The establishment of the welfare state dramatically altered the terms of American political discourse. Democrats have enthusiastically supported welfare state programs believing they are necessary to the idea of community and promoting justice in America. Republicans, opposing the expansion of government power, see the welfare state as a threat to liberty and personal responsibility.
